Caveolae는 세포막의 특수한 영역으로, 다양한 지질 및 단백질 분자의 격리에 관여합니다. 이러한 세포 소기관은 지질 대사, 성장 조절, 신호 전달, 세포자멸사 등 다양한 생화학적 과정에서 중요한 역할을 하는 것으로 알려져 있습니다. Caveolin은 이종삼합체 G-단백질과 상호작용하며 이를 조절합니다. Caveolin 다유전자 패밀리에는 21–24 kDa의 막단백질을 암호화하는 세 가지 멤버가 있으며, 이들은 생체 내에서 caveolar 막의 주요 구조적 성분을 구성합니다. Caveolin-2 단백질은 섬유아세포, 분화된 지방세포, 평활근 및 골격근, 내피세포에서 풍부하게 발현됩니다. Caveolin-1의 발현은 Caveolin-2와 유사하며, Caveolin-3은 주로 근육 조직에 제한적으로 발현됩니다.
