Target Information

The ABCC5 gene encodes a member of the ATP-binding cassette (ABC) transporter superfamily. These proteins transport various molecules across cellular membranes and are categorized into seven subfamilies (ABC1, MDR/TAP, MRP, ALD, OABP, GCN20, White).
ABCC5 belongs to the MRP subfamily and is involved in multidrug resistance, mediating export of cyclic nucleotides and contributing to phosphodiesterase degradation. It confers resistance to thiopurine anticancer drugs (6-mercaptopurine, thioguanine) and the anti-HIV drug 9-(2-phosphonylmethoxyethyl)adenine.
This protein may play a role in thiopurine resistance in acute lymphoblastic leukemia and nucleoside analog resistance in HIV-infected patients. Alternative splicing has been observed, but the full sequence and translation start site remain unclear.
