Target Information

The Myogenic determination gene (MyoD) was first identified by its ability to convert embryonic mouse fibroblast cells into muscle cells. Forced expression of the MyoD (human homolog: myf3) gene can activate muscle-specific genes in various normal and neoplastic cells.
The regulatory domain of the MyoD protein includes a 70 amino acid region containing a basic DNA binding motif and a helix-loop-helix (HLH) dimerization motif.
Other homologous genes with similar HLH domains include myf5, myogenin (myf4), and myf6 (MRF4/herculin).
