Target Information
Glutamate is the main excitatory neurotransmitter in the brain. It acts on ligand-gated receptor channels such as NMDA, AMPA, and kainate receptors involved in fast excitatory synaptic transmission.
Metabotropic glutamate receptors (mGluRs) regulate enzymes producing second messengers via G-protein coupling.
- Group I receptors (mGluR1a, mGluR5): stimulate phospholipase C, increasing phosphoinositide turnover and calcium release.
- Group II and III receptors (including mGluR2 and mGluR3): inhibit adenylyl cyclase.
