Target Information
Peroxisomes are subcellular organelles involved in lipid metabolism and are found in nearly all eukaryotic cells. The peroxisomal membrane contains integral and peripheral membrane proteins responsible for the import of matrix proteins and metabolite transport.
PXMP2 (Peroxisomal membrane protein 2), also known as PMP22, is a 195-amino-acid multi-pass membrane protein belonging to the PXMP2/4 family. PXMP2 interacts with Peroxin 19 and Siva proteins. Peroxin 19 binds multiple peroxisomal membrane proteins, is mainly cytoplasmic, and is required for peroxisome membrane synthesis. PXMP2 is highly expressed in liver, kidney, and heart tissues and may contribute to the permeability of the peroxisomal membrane. Disruption of the PXMP2 gene affects peroxisomal membrane permeability in vitro and in vivo. The gene is conserved across multiple species and maps to human chromosome 12q24.33.
