Target Information
IL-1 alpha (Interleukin-1 alpha) is a proinflammatory cytokine expressed by monocytes, macrophages, and dendritic cells. It is encoded by the IL1A gene and signals through IL-1RI and IL-1RII receptors, shared with IL-1 beta.
Located on chromosome 2q13, IL-1α plays a key role in innate host defense by inducing the production of other proinflammatory cytokines and initiating acute-phase responses.
Its activity is moderated by IL-1 Receptor Antagonist (IL-1RA), which blocks receptor binding.
IL-1α regulates NF-κB and MAPK pathways, stimulates IL6 and COX-2 (PTGS2) expression, and enhances NO production.
Elevated IL-1α levels are associated with chronic inflammatory diseases such as rheumatoid arthritis, psoriasis, and multiple sclerosis.
