Target Information
IL-1 alpha (Interleukin-1 alpha) is a proinflammatory cytokine expressed by monocytes, macrophages, and dendritic cells. It is encoded by the IL1A gene and signals through receptors IL-1RI and IL-1RII, which are shared with IL-1 beta.
IL1A is located on chromosome 2q13 and plays a key role in innate host defense by inducing production of other proinflammatory cytokines and initiating acute-phase responses.
IL-1 alpha activity is regulated by IL-1 Receptor Antagonist (IL-1RA), which inhibits receptor binding competitively.
This cytokine influences immune responses, inflammation, and hematopoiesis, and is produced as a proprotein that is processed and released upon cell injury to induce apoptosis.
High IL-1 alpha levels are associated with chronic inflammatory diseases such as rheumatoid arthritis, psoriasis, and multiple sclerosis.
