Target Information
Rims1 is a RAS gene superfamily member that regulates synaptic vesicle exocytosis.
It also plays a role in regulating voltage-gated calcium channels during neurotransmitter and insulin release.
Mutations in the Rims1 gene are linked to cone-rod dystrophy type 7 and may affect cognition.
Rims1 functions as a scaffold protein that regulates neurotransmitter release at the active zone and may be essential for maintaining normal release probability and short-term synaptic plasticity.
Additionally, Rims1 contributes to dendrite formation by melanocytes.
Multiple transcript variants encoding different isoforms have been described for this gene.
Diseases associated with RIMS1 include Cone-Rod Dystrophy 7 and Retinitis Pigmentosa.
