Target Information
This gene encodes a member of the Hedgehog family, which produces signaling molecules essential for morphogenesis regulation. The protein is synthesized as a precursor that undergoes autocatalytic cleavage:
- The N-terminal portion is soluble and carries signaling activity.
- The C-terminal portion facilitates precursor processing and attaches a cholesterol moiety to the N-terminal product, restricting its diffusion.
Mutations in this gene are linked to partial gonadal dysgenesis (PGD) with minifascicular polyneuropathy. The protein is implicated in male gonadal differentiation and perineurial development.
