Target Information
The NDUFS4 gene encodes an accessory subunit of the mitochondrial membrane respiratory chain NADH dehydrogenase (Complex I), also known as NADH:ubiquinone oxidoreductase. This enzyme complex is the first multi-subunit complex of the mitochondrial respiratory chain and plays a key role in cellular ATP production. It transfers electrons from NADH through a series of protein-coupled redox centers to ubiquinone, contributing to the generation of a proton gradient across the inner mitochondrial membrane. Complex I consists of at least 41 subunits, 7 encoded by mitochondrial DNA and the remainder by nuclear genes.
