Target Information
Cytochrome c oxidase (COX) family proteins serve as the final electron donor in the respiratory chain, driving a proton gradient across the inner mitochondrial membrane and resulting in water production. The mammalian COX apoenzyme is a dimer composed of 13 subunits—some mitochondrial, some nuclear. COX5 is a heme A-containing chain that converts oxygen and hydrogen into water. Two isoforms exist: COX5a (aerobic) and COX5b (hypoxic). COX5a transcription increases under high oxygen conditions, while COX5b transcription rises under low oxygen to optimize COX apoenzyme turnover.
