Target Information
Superoxide dismutase (SOD) is an antioxidant enzyme involved in the defense system against reactive oxygen species (ROS).
SOD catalyzes the dismutation of superoxide radical anion (O₂⁻) to hydrogen peroxide (H₂O₂), which is further converted to water and oxygen by glutathione peroxidase and catalase.
There are several classes of SOD:
- SOD1 (Cu, Zn-SOD): Intracellular enzyme found in all eukaryotic species; homodimeric 32 kDa enzyme containing copper and zinc ions.
- SOD2 (Mn-SOD): Mitochondrial matrix enzyme; tetrameric 80 kDa manganese-containing enzyme located near the mitochondrial respiratory chain.
- SOD3 (EC-SOD): Extracellular, heparin-binding multimer expressed in lungs, vessel walls, and airways.
- SOD4 (CCS): Copper chaperone for superoxide dismutase; delivers copper to Cu/Zn-SOD for activation.
