Target Information

The androgen receptor (AR) is a member of the steroid-hormone receptor superfamily of nuclear receptors. It is a ligand-activated transcription factor that binds testosterone (T) and dihydrotestosterone (DHT). Upon ligand binding, AR translocates into the nucleus, dimerizes, and stimulates transcription of androgen-responsive genes.
AR signaling is crucial for the development and function of male reproductive organs such as the prostate and epididymis, and also plays roles in muscle, hair follicles, and brain.
The receptor is a phosphoprotein that regulates MAP kinase activity. Inhibition of the MEK1/2 pathway correlates with changes in AR phosphorylation state.
Abnormalities in AR signaling are associated with diseases including prostate cancer, Kennedy’s disease, and male infertility. Mutations in AR can cause complete androgen insensitivity (CAIS).
