Target Information
Alpha 2-Macroglobulin (A2M) is an approximately 720 kDa homotetrameric glycoprotein composed of four identical ~180 kDa subunits. A2M shares structural features with other alpha-macroglobulins such as complement components C3 and C4, and pregnancy zone protein (PZP), exhibiting broad ligand-binding capacity. This enables A2M to act as a humoral defense barrier against foreign peptides in plasma. A2M interacts with and captures virtually any proteinase, functioning as a panprotease inhibitor. In Alzheimer’s disease (AD) brains, A2M has been localized to diffuse amyloid plaques, suggesting an important role in AD pathogenesis.
