Target Information

Collagen I is a type I collagen with a triple helix structure composed of two alpha-1 chains and one alpha-2 chain. It is a fibril-forming collagen found in most connective tissues and is abundant in bone, cornea, dermis, and tendon.
Mutations in the COL1A2 gene encoding the alpha-2 chain are associated with osteogenesis imperfecta (types I–IV), Ehlers-Danlos syndrome (type VIIB and classical type), idiopathic osteoporosis, and atypical Marfan syndrome.
Mutations in COL1A2 generally cause less severe symptoms than those in COL1A1, reflecting the different structural roles of alpha-2 chains.
Reciprocal translocations between chromosomes 17 and 22, where Collagen Type I and platelet-derived growth factor beta genes are located, are linked to dermatofibrosarcoma protuberans due to unregulated growth factor expression.
Two transcripts have been identified from alternate polyadenylation signals.
