JAM3는 세포 간의 밀착연접(tight junction)에 관여하며, 상피 또는 내피 세포층에서 세포 간 접착의 한 형태를 나타냅니다. 이 단백질은 연속적인 밀폐 구조를 형성하여 용질과 물이 세포 간 공간을 자유롭게 통과하는 것을 방지하는 물리적 장벽 역할을 합니다. JAM3는 면역글로불린 초가족에 속하며, 다른 구성원과 달리 백혈구 세포주에 부착하지 못하고 약한 동종 상호작용만을 형성합니다. 이 단백질은 junctional adhesion molecule (JAM) 단백질 패밀리의 일원으로, 동일 패밀리 내 다른 단백질의 수용체로 작용합니다.
