Target Information
The PDE4B gene belongs to the type IV, cyclic AMP (cAMP)-specific, cyclic nucleotide phosphodiesterase (PDE) family. Cyclic nucleotides act as second messengers regulating cellular responses to extracellular signals such as hormones, light, and neurotransmitters. PDEs control intracellular cyclic nucleotide levels and are key regulators in signal transduction. PDE4B specifically hydrolyzes cAMP, and altered activity has been linked to schizophrenia and bipolar affective disorder. Multiple isoforms are produced via alternative splicing.
