Target Information
REST (RE1-silencing transcription factor) is a transcriptional repressor that binds neuron-restrictive silencer element (NRSE) and represses neuronal gene transcription in non-neuronal cells. It restricts neuronal gene expression by associating with corepressors mSin3 and CoREST, which recruit histone deacetylase complexes to REST-regulated promoters. REST mediates repression through the BHC complex, functioning as a chromatin modifier by deacetylating and demethylating specific histone sites.
