Target Information
The SERPINC1 gene encodes a plasma protease inhibitor belonging to the serpin superfamily. This protein inhibits thrombin and other activated serine proteases in the coagulation system, thereby regulating the blood coagulation cascade. It includes two functional domains:
- Heparin binding domain at the N-terminus
- Reactive site domain at the C-terminus
The inhibitory activity is enhanced by the presence of heparin. Over 120 mutations in this gene have been identified, many associated with antithrombin-III deficiency.
