Target Information

Calcium/calmodulin-dependent protein kinase that functions autonomously after Ca(2+)/calmodulin-binding and autophosphorylation. Involved in dendritic spine and synapse formation, neuronal plasticity, and regulation of sarcoplasmic reticulum Ca(2+) transport in skeletal muscle. Plays a structural role in actin cytoskeleton reorganization during neuronal plasticity. Required for proper targeting of CaMK2A, promoting dendritic spine and synapse formation and maintaining synaptic plasticity for LTP and hippocampus-dependent learning. In developing hippocampal neurons, promotes dendritic arborization; in mature neurons, promotes dendritic remodeling. Participates in modulation of skeletal muscle function in response to exercise, regulating SR Ca(2+) transport and Ca(2+) release through phosphorylation of triadin and phospholamban.
