Target Information

Cadherins are a multigene family of Ca²⁺-dependent cell adhesion molecules. They are transmembrane glycoproteins composed of an extracellular domain mediating Ca²⁺-dependent intercellular adhesion through homophilic interactions, a transmembrane region, and a cytoplasmic domain. The extracellular domain is divided into subdomains EC1–EC5. Homologies among cadherin family members are strongest in the cytoplasmic domain and EC1–EC2 regions, and less so in EC5 and the transmembrane region. Adhesive binding properties are located in the N-terminal part of the molecules. Four major mammalian cadherins—neuronal (N), epithelial (E), placental (P), and muscle (M)—have been identified. M-cadherin is expressed at low levels in myoblasts and upregulated during myotube formation, suggesting a specific role in skeletal muscle cell differentiation.
