Target Information
Cytokeratin 18 (Keratin 18, KRT18, type I cytoskeletal 18) is a member of the acidic (type A) subfamily of low molecular weight keratins, typically paired with cytokeratin 8. It is expressed in epithelial tissues of the gastrointestinal, respiratory, and urogenital tracts, as well as endocrine and exocrine tissues and mesothelial cells. Cytokeratin 18 is predominantly found in non-squamous epithelia and in most adenocarcinomas and ductal carcinomas, but not in squamous cell carcinomas. Hepatocellular carcinomas express only cytokeratins 8 and 18. Mutations in the KRT18 gene have been associated with cryptogenic cirrhosis. Two transcript variants encoding the same protein are known. Cytokeratin subtype expression patterns assist in distinguishing various epithelial malignancies. These antibodies are valuable tools for differential tumor diagnosis, cytopathology, and flow cytometric assays.
