Target Information
Mitochondrial peripheral-type benzodiazepine receptor (PBR) is an essential component of the steroidogenic machinery, mediating cholesterol delivery to the inner mitochondrial membrane upon ligand activation. PBR consists of three subunits: an isoquinoline binding site, a voltage-dependent anion channel, and an adenine nucleotide carrier. It is conserved from bacteria to humans, widely expressed in peripheral organs, and mainly localized in glial cells within the brain. Peroxisome proliferator perfluordecanoic acid (PFDA) inhibits Leydig cell steroidogenesis by destabilizing PBR mRNA, thereby suppressing PBR expression, cholesterol transport, and steroid formation. The cytoplasmic protein PRAX-1 (Peripheral Benzodiazepine Receptor-Associated Protein 1) specifically interacts with PBR.
