Target Information
Neuron specific enolase (NSE, ENO1, ENO2, ENO3) is an enzyme that catalyzes the conversion of 2-phosphoglycerate to phosphoenolpyruvate in glycolysis and the reverse reaction in gluconeogenesis. NSE is highly stable in biological fluids and diffuses into cerebrospinal fluid when neuronal membranes are injured.
NSE is one of three mammalian enolases (alpha, beta, gamma). The gamma-subunit is expressed primarily in neurons and neuroendocrine cells. Co-expression of NSE and chromogranin A is typical in neuroendocrine neoplasms.
Antibodies to NSE are useful for identifying neuronal cell bodies, developing neuronal lineage, and neuroendocrine cells. NSE release into CSF and blood serves as a biomarker of neuronal injury and is clinically used as a marker in neurological disorders such as stroke, hypoxic brain damage, status epilepticus, Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease, and herpetic encephalitis. Elevated NSE levels are also found in plasma and certain neoplasias, including pediatric neuroblastoma and small cell lung cancer.
