Target Information
Estrogen Receptors (ER) are members of the steroid/thyroid hormone receptor superfamily of nuclear receptors.
The estrogen receptor is a ligand-activated transcription factor that, upon binding estrogen, undergoes a conformational change allowing dimerization and binding to estrogen response elements (ERE) in DNA.
ER regulates gene transcription through recruitment of coactivator or corepressor proteins.
Two forms exist — alpha (ESR1) and beta (ESR2) — with multiple isoforms of ER-alpha (66, 53, 47, and 35 kDa).
These receptors are essential for sexual development, reproductive function, bone physiology, and are implicated in breast and endometrial cancer, as well as osteoporosis.
