Target Information
This gene encodes a chymotryptic serine proteinase belonging to the peptidase family S1. It is expressed in mast cells and functions in extracellular matrix degradation, regulation of submucosal gland secretion, and generation of vasoactive peptides. In cardiac and vascular tissues, this protein converts angiotensin I to angiotensin II, influencing blood pressure regulation and cardiovascular pathologies such as hypertension, cardiac hypertrophy, and heart failure. The gene maps to 14q11.2 within a cluster of protease-encoding genes.
