Target Information
Cytokeratins are a subfamily of intermediate filament proteins characterized by remarkable biochemical diversity. In human epithelial tissues, at least 20 distinct cytokeratin polypeptides have been identified, ranging in molecular weight between approximately 40 kDa and 68 kDa and isoelectric pH between 4.9 and 7.8.
Individual cytokeratins are numbered 1 to 20. Different epithelia express specific cytokeratin patterns that reflect both tissue type and degree of differentiation. These expression profiles are increasingly used to distinguish epithelial malignancies. Cytokeratin antibodies assist in tumor differential diagnosis via immunohistochemistry and are also valuable tools in cytopathology and flow cytometry.
