ME1 (Malic Enzyme 1) encodes a cytosolic, NADP-dependent enzyme that generates NADPH for fatty acid biosynthesis.
The enzyme catalyzes the reversible oxidative decarboxylation of malate, linking the glycolytic and citric acid cycles.
Expression of this gene is regulated by thyroid hormones and dietary carbohydrate levels.
