Claudin-4는 상피 및 내피 세포의 타이트 접합부에 위치한 트랜스멤브레인 세포 접착 단백질로, 20개 멤버로 구성된 클라우딘 계열에 속합니다. 각 클라우딘은 조직 특이적인 발현 패턴을 보이며, 세포 간 이온 흐름을 조절하는 타이트 접합 채널의 필수 구성 요소입니다. Claudin-4는 타이트 접합 스트랜드의 구성 요소로, 기관 발달 및 기능 조절에 관여할 수 있습니다. 과발현 시 나트륨 투과성을 선택적으로 감소시켜 세포 간 전기 전도도를 낮추는 것으로 알려져 있습니다. 또한 난소암, 췌장암 및 기타 상피암 세포에서 Claudin-3 및 Claudin-4의 발현이 증가되어 있습니다. Claudin-4 유전자는 Williams-Beuren 증후군에서도 결실되어 있으며, 이 질환은 여러 기관에 영향을 미치는 신경발달 장애입니다.
