Specificity Comments:
In skeletal muscle, AQP4 (aquaporin 4, also known as mercurial insensitive water channel) localizes to the sarcolemma of fast-twitch muscle fibers. Aquaporins (AQPs) are integral membrane water transport channel proteins that facilitate the movement of water across cell membranes, a function conserved across animals, plants, and bacteria. Multiple isoforms (AQP0–AQP10) exist in mammals, often co-expressed in the same cell.
Some AQPs (AQP3, AQP7, AQP9, and one AQP10 transcript) also transport urea and glycerol. AQP2 is uniquely activated by vasopressin to enhance water reabsorption in kidney collecting ducts. Aquaporins are involved in renal water absorption, pulmonary secretion generation, lacrimation, and cerebrospinal fluid and aqueous humor secretion/reabsorption.
Target Information
Apolipoprotein E (Apo E) plays a key role in lipid metabolism and is a component of various plasma lipoprotein-lipid particles. It is synthesized in the liver, brain, spleen, and kidney, and is abundant in interstitial fluids, where it mediates cholesterol distribution between cells. Apo E contributes to the formation of very low-density lipoprotein (VLDL) and chylomicrons.
The Apo E gene is located on chromosome 19 at position 19q13.2.
