Target Information
Beta-catenin is an adherens junction (AJ) protein involved in cell-cell adhesion and signaling. It interacts with E-cadherin and alpha-catenin to link cell adhesion complexes to the actin cytoskeleton. Beta-catenin also associates with the adenomatous polyposis coli protein and microtubules, participating in signaling pathways that regulate morphogenesis and cell proliferation.
It is expressed in various hair follicle cell types and epithelial tissues. Dysregulation of beta-catenin has been implicated in several cancers, including colorectal, ovarian, and breast cancer. In the nucleus, beta-catenin co-activates Lef/Tcf transcription factors, promoting expression of genes such as cyclin D and c-myc, which drive cell proliferation and tumorigenesis.
