Background
This gene encodes one of several uracil-DNA glycosylases. These enzymes prevent mutagenesis by eliminating uracil from DNA molecules through cleavage of the N-glycosylic bond, initiating the base-excision repair (BER) pathway. Uracil bases arise from cytosine deamination or misincorporation of dUMP residues. Alternative promoter usage and splicing lead to two isoforms: mitochondrial UNG1 and nuclear UNG2. The UNG2 term was previously used for the CCNO gene (GeneID 10309), which has caused confusion in some literature and databases. [provided by RefSeq, Nov 2010]
