Background
A chromosomal aberration involving SS18 may cause synovial sarcoma. The translocation t(X;18)(p11.2;q11.2) is specifically found in more than 80% of synovial sarcoma cases. The fusion products SSXT-SSX1 or SSXT-SSX2 likely contribute to transforming activity. Breakpoint heterogeneity can occur at low frequency. SS18 belongs to the SS18 family and is fairly ubiquitously expressed, including in synovial sarcomas and other human cell lines. The fusion genes SSXT-SSX1 and SSXT-SSX2 are expressed only in synovial sarcomas.
