Background
This gene encodes a protein that belongs to the stathmin protein family. Members of this family form complexes with tubulins at a ratio of two tubulins per stathmin molecule. Microtubule formation requires the ordered assembly of α- and β-tubulins, and complex formation with stathmin disrupts microtubule assembly and function. A pseudogene of this gene is located on chromosome 22. Alternative splicing results in multiple transcript variants.
