Background
This gene encodes a protein that is a member of the seven in absentia homolog (SIAH) family. The protein functions as an E3 ubiquitin ligase and participates in ubiquitination and proteasome-mediated degradation of specific proteins. Its activity has been implicated in certain forms of Parkinson’s disease, regulation of cellular response to hypoxia, and induction of apoptosis. Alternative splicing generates several transcript variants, some encoding different isoforms and others not fully characterized. (RefSeq, Jul 2008)
