Background
C-X-C motif chemokine ligand 12 (CXCL12) is a stromal cell-derived alpha chemokine belonging to the intercrine family. It acts as a ligand for the G-protein coupled receptor CXCR4 and is involved in various cellular functions such as embryogenesis, immune surveillance, inflammation, tissue homeostasis, and tumor growth and metastasis. Mutations in this gene are associated with resistance to HIV-1 infection. Multiple transcript variants encoding different isoforms have been identified. (RefSeq, Sep 2014)
