Target Information
The ENT1 gene belongs to the equilibrative nucleoside transporter family. It encodes a transmembrane glycoprotein localized to plasma and mitochondrial membranes, mediating cellular uptake of nucleosides. This equilibrative transporter is sensitive to inhibition by nitrobenzylthioinosine. Nucleoside transporters are essential for nucleotide synthesis in cells lacking de novo synthesis pathways and are crucial for uptake of cytotoxic nucleosides used in cancer and antiviral therapies. Multiple alternatively spliced variants encoding the same protein have been identified.
