Target Information
FOXL2 is a winged helix/forkhead transcription factor highly conserved among human, goat, mouse, and certain aquatic species. It plays a critical role in ovarian differentiation and follicle development. Immunohistochemical data indicate that FOXL2 is a nuclear protein expressed in eyelids and ovarian follicular cells. It is associated with blepharophimosis/ptosis/epicanthus inversus syndrome (BPES), which manifests in two forms:
- Type I BPES: Eyelid abnormalities with ovarian failure
- Type II BPES: Eyelid defects only
Studies show FOXL2 expression in the mesenchyme of developing mouse eyelids and adult ovarian follicles.
