Target Information
The SMC3 gene belongs to the SMC3 subfamily of structural maintenance of chromosomes proteins. The encoded protein can exist as an intracellular, nuclear protein or as a secreted form. The nuclear form, known as structural maintenance of chromosomes 3, is a component of the cohesin complex responsible for holding sister chromatids together during mitosis, ensuring proper chromosome segregation. Post-translational modification with chondroitin sulfate chains produces the secreted proteoglycan bamacan, a major basement membrane protein.
