An important paralog of this gene is UCN3. UCN2 belongs to the sauvagine/corticotropin-releasing factor/urotensin I family and is structurally related to the corticotropin-releasing factor (CRF) gene.
The encoded product acts as an endogenous ligand for CRF type 2 receptors, potentially mediating stress-related effects on appetite. Despite the gene family name similarity, UCN2 shares no sequence similarity with urotensin II.
