Target Information
MELK is a serine/threonine kinase related to the AMPK family and is linked to cell cycle regulation. It is overexpressed in various cancers and considered a potential target for cancer therapeutics. MELK phosphorylates substrates including BCL2L14, CDC25B, MAP3K5/ASK1, and ZNF622, acting as an activator of apoptosis and a regulator of mitosis. It plays a critical role in cell proliferation, carcinogenesis, and neural progenitor proliferation. MELK also affects mammary carcinogenesis by inhibiting BCL2L14 and contributes to spliceosome regulation during mitosis.
