Target Information
Mammalian mitochondrial ribosomal proteins are encoded by nuclear genes and assist in protein synthesis within the mitochondrion. Mitochondrial ribosomes (mitoribosomes) consist of a small 28S subunit and a large 39S subunit, with about 75% protein and 25% rRNA composition, opposite to prokaryotic ribosomes. Mammalian mitoribosomes lack a 5S rRNA found in prokaryotes. The proteins comprising the mitoribosome differ significantly among species, affecting sequence and biochemical properties. This gene encodes a 39S subunit protein. Multiple transcript variants encoding different isoforms have been identified, some possibly subject to nonsense-mediated decay (NMD).
