Chlamydia trachomatis is an intracellular organism that commonly infects the cervix and fallopian tubes in women and the urethra in men. Chlamydial infections are among the most common sexually transmitted diseases (STDs). In a population of 15 million, up to 300,000 cases may occur annually, with many undiagnosed. The true prevalence in sexually active populations is estimated at 5–10%. Chlamydia trachomatis is also a leading cause of blindness in underdeveloped countries.
