Target Information
Interleukin-1 beta (IL-1β) is a proinflammatory cytokine expressed by monocytes, macrophages, and dendritic cells. It is synthesized as a 31 kDa inactive pro-form and cleaved into an active 17 kDa form via inflammasome-mediated caspase-1 activation. IL-1β lacks a classical secretion signal and is released by an alternate mechanism alongside caspase-1. It signals through IL-1RI and IL-1RII receptors, shared with IL-1α. IL-1RA acts as a competitive inhibitor to moderate IL-1β activity. Elevated IL-1β levels are associated with chronic inflammatory conditions, and neutralizing antibodies may have therapeutic potential.
