Target Information
Branched-chain keto acid dehydrogenase (BCKD) is a multienzyme complex located in the inner mitochondrial membrane, functioning in the catabolism of branched-chain amino acids. The complex includes three components:
- E1 (branched-chain alpha-keto acid decarboxylase)
- E2 (lipoamide acyltransferase)
- E3 (lipoamide dehydrogenase)
This gene encodes the E1 beta subunit. Mutations in this gene are associated with Maple Syrup Urine Disease (MSUD), type 1B, which is characterized by a maple syrup odor in urine, mental and physical retardation, and feeding problems.
