Target Information

This gene encodes a member of the degenerin/epithelial sodium channel (DEG/ENaC) superfamily. Members of this family are amiloride-sensitive sodium channels with intracellular N and C termini, two hydrophobic transmembrane regions, and a large extracellular loop containing many cysteine residues with conserved spacing.
The encoded protein is expressed in most brain neurons and may function as an ion channel subunit. It is a cation channel with high affinity for sodium, gated by extracellular protons and inhibited by the diuretic amiloride.
ASIC1 is permeable to Ca²⁺, Li⁺, and K⁺ and is expressed in dorsal root ganglia, sciatic nerves, olfactory bulb, neocortical and allocortical regions, dentate granule cells, hippocampal CA1–CA3 pyramidal cells, habenula, basolateral amygdaloid nuclei, and cerebellar Purkinje and granule cells. It is also diffusely detected across basal ganglia regions including thalamic nuclei, substantia nigra, striatum, globus pallidus, hypothalamus, midbrain, pons, medulla, and choroid plexus.
Isoform 3 is expressed only in dorsal root ganglia, while isoform 1 is expressed in DRG, spinal cord, trigeminal ganglia, and trigeminal mesencephalic nucleus.
