Target Information
Adenylate kinase is an enzyme that regulates the adenine nucleotide composition within a cell by catalyzing the reversible transfer of phosphate groups among adenine nucleotides.
Three isozymes of adenylate kinase have been identified in vertebrates: AK1, AK2, and AK3.
- AK1: Found in the cytosol of skeletal muscle, brain, and erythrocytes.
- AK2 and AK3: Found in the mitochondria of tissues such as liver and heart.
AK1 has been linked to a rare genetic disorder causing nonspherocytic hemolytic anemia, where a mutation in the AK1 gene reduces the enzyme’s catalytic activity.
