Target Information

In response to adverse environmental changes, cells increase the expression of heat shock proteins (HSPs). The small heat shock proteins (15–30 kDa) include diverse forms found in yeast, humans, and higher plants. Elevated stress protein expression has been linked to neoplasia, with Hsp27 showing rapid phosphorylation in response to mitogens, tumor promoters, and calcium ionophores. The 24 kDa estrogen-induced protein correlates with steroid hormone receptor expression and is highly expressed in breast carcinoma and endometrial adenocarcinomas. Regulation of human Hsp27 by estrogens and heat shock parallels the ecdysteroid and heat shock activation of Drosophila Hsp20 genes.
