Target Information
In response to environmental stress, cells increase expression of heat shock proteins (HSPs). Among them, small heat shock proteins (15–30 kDa) play key roles in stress response and cellular protection. Elevated expression of stress proteins has been associated with neoplastic transformation, as shown in studies on estrogen-induced proteins in breast cancer cells. Hsp27, a 24 kDa estrogen-induced protein, is highly expressed in breast carcinoma and correlates with steroid hormone receptor presence. Similar regulatory mechanisms are observed in endometrial adenocarcinomas and resemble hormone and heat shock regulation in Drosophila Hsp20 genes.
