Target Information
Synaptotagmin 1 is a synaptic vesicle membrane glycoprotein widely expressed throughout the CNS. It acts as a Ca²⁺ sensor regulating exocytosis and neurotransmitter release. Ca²⁺-mediated binding of SNAP25 by Synaptotagmin 1 is essential for membrane fusion. Specific residues within the C2B domain determine endocytic rate and vesicle size. Synaptotagmin 1 also interacts with acidic phospholipids, neurexins, syntaxin, and AP2. Dysfunction is associated with food-borne and infant botulism.
